Civil War Service - Served in the 34 and 19th Arkansas infantry, also called the 2nd Regiment. While fighting for the South along the Mississippi River he was wounded in the hand and passed out. When he came to his regiment had left him for dead, he pulled himself out of the river and walked back home in Schaal, Ark.
John became a farmer and Married Mary Schaal in 1865, they had 10 children.
