Alfred Burks Earnest, of Houston, was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. He spent his childhood riding in horse shows and playing sports. Al received several high school honors and served as senior class president. He attended Duke University, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. After receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Air Force, Al joined Shell Oil Company in San Francisco. There he met Helen Marie Aune, whom he married on June 26, 1956. He retired from Shell in 1983. An avid golfer, Al was a member of Pine Forest Country Club and served as President in 1983. He also served as a Loan Executive for the United Way and worked for them for 13 years.

Al is survived by his wife of 53 years, Helen; three children: Alan Earnest and wife Ann, Susan Harbin and husband Richard, and Paul Earnest and wife Shelley; three grandsons and two granddaughters.

Services were held on Friday, October 30, 2009 at Christ the Servant Lutheran Church in Houston. Al will be remembered for his integrity and character, his commitment to God and serving others, and his lighthearted humor. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
