Obituary for Velma Conlon
Velma Conlon, 96, of Humboldt, passed away May 12, 2015 at the Marian Home in Fort Dodge. A Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by Father James Tigges, will be 11:00 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Humboldt. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. thursday in the chapel of the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Mrs. Conlon is survived by her daughters, Marie (Roger) Wilkie of Kansas City, MO, Marjorie (Dennis) O'Donnell of Richland, WA, and JoAnn (John) Mallinger of Fort Dodge; grandchildren, Richard (Kim) Wilkie of Houston, TX, Robin (Peter) Manson of Australia, Jyl (Norbert) Lindig of Kansas City, Linda )Tom) Sparling of Yakama, WA, Jeff O'Donnell of Houston, TX, Amanda Mallinger of Des Moines, Matthew (Beth) Mallinger of Des Moines, and Joshua (Sara) Mallinger of Des Moines; and great grandchildren, Rob, Ben, Zander, Miller, Connor, and Cadence.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Vernon and Lula (Williams) Evans; her husband, Joseph Conlon; brother, Ivan Evans; sisters, Violet Reichardt and Arlene Houghton-Hubbell.
Velma Evans, the daughter of John Vernon and Lula (Williams) Evans, was born January 26, 1919 on a farm near Gilmore City, Iowa. She was raised in the Gilmore City and Unique area where she attended country schools. Following her graduation from Gilmore City High School, Velma went to work in the ASCS Office in Humboldt. She was united in marriage to Joseph A. Conlon on January 7, 1941 at St. Benedict and made their home briefly in Fort Dodge and Oskaloosa. They began farming near Livermore before moving to a farm north of Humboldt. While on a cattle buying trip in Western Iowa, Mr. Conlon perished in a blizzard in 1950 at the age of 31. In November of 1950, Velma and her daughters moved to Humboldt where she returned to work at the ASCS Office. She retied in 1984 after 34 years of service. She continued to maintain her home in Humboldt until becoming a resident of the Marian Home in Fort Dodge seven years ago.
Mrs. Conlon was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She enjoyed her involvement in Birthday Club, S&B Club, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Velma was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing, and coffee with her friends. Above all, Velma loved the time she spent with her family.
