Icel Vere Alton

Icel Vere Alton, 94, of La Crosse passed away Monday, June 6, 2011, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center.

He was born to Almon and Celia (Trabert) Alton on Sept. 3, 1916, on the premises of the early landmark, Holch's Mill, Slabtown, Township of Wellington, Monroe County, Wisconsin. He attended Wilton grade school and graduated from Wilton High School, class of 1933.

He married Evelyn Neary in Decorah, Iowa, on Dec. 20, 1935. Together they farmed on South Ridge on what, in the days of horse drawn machinery, was considered a very large farm. With World War II becoming more sinister, he sold his farm interests and moved to La Crosse. He then went to work for the then CB&Q Railroad in 1942 as a fireman on coal fired steam locomotives, and retired in 1977, from the then Burlington Northern Railroad as an Engineer. He also worked for many years as representative for the Legislative and Protective Departments of the then B of LF and E organization. He retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad in July 1977.

After his retirement, Evelyn and he traveled extensively across the North American Continent in their RV Trailer from Circle, Alaska, to Key West, Fla.; from Chibougamu, Quebec to Hermosillo, Mexico, spending many weeks on visits to the Big Horn Mountains plus the Graybull River Basin areas of Wyoming. Rejecting Florida after two winters, they spent thirteen winters in Arizona in Apache Junction, then the San Pedro Vally in St. David, Ariz.

When Evelyn's health started to fail, Icel sold his property in St. David and returned to French Island, their real home for nearly fifty years. When Evelyn's health worsened, it became evident of the need for easier access of wheelchair and ambulance service. They sold their home and moved to an apartment with better facilities. Eveyln's death on Valentines Day of 2002, left Icel alone in the unfamiliar apartment, with no memories. He was not happy there and with the help of his children moved to a mobile home court in Desoto, Wis., to be near his son Dale and his wife.

Along with his children, Dale L. (Shirley) Alton, daughter, Patricia C. (Ronald, Sr.) Goede of Goreville, Ill., son, Almon J. (Hattie) Alton of South Range, Wis., son, Larry S. (Jane) Alton of Racine, Wis.; left to mourn their loss, fourteen grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday June 9, in the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 809 Gillette St., LaCrosse. The Reverend Scott McMurray of St. Luke's United Methodist Church will officiate and burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Wilton. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the services at the funeral home on Thursday.
