William was born to Simon Peter Hall and Adah Woffenden.

When William's mother, Adah Woffenden Hall, died young, she left three children: William, 10; Emma, 8; and Ernest Woffenden, 5 months.

William stayed with his father and learned his father's trade: waggon maker. Emma went to live with her mother's brother, William Woffenden and his wife, Harriett. Ernest was adopted by his mother's parents.

William's father eventually remarried and had another family of six children. In 1888, William's father and step-mother went to America.

William stayed in England and married Fanny Lois Smith March 19, 1892 at St. Thomas the Apostle church in Batley, Yorkshire, England. They had one child in England: Emma.

In 1906 William, Fanny, and Emma went to America: first to Albion, Idaho, and, then, to Ogden, Utah. While they were in Ogden, Fanny gave birth to her second child, Ralph William. The family eventually moved to Salt Lake City, Utah.

William and Fanny's two children were:

Emma Hall (1893 - 1979)
Ralph William Hall (1913 - 1963)
