Henry Frederick C. Rhodes and Fredericka Caroline Sophia Miller of Mecklenburgh, Germany immigrated to the U.S. as children in 1872 and 1873 and moved to Kent, Ohio. They were married on 27 Apr 1886 and had 9 children. Carl Frederick Rhodes was the youngest of the 9. He was born a few minutes after his twin brother, George Theodore Rhodes. They were over 9 lbs each.
Carl had a rough life due to the death of his father when he was 9 years old. Henry worked for the railroad and was struck by lumber on a train and died from his injuries. All of the kids were expected to get jobs and help support the home.
Carl was a tree surgeon, a rum runner during prohibition, a security guard, and many other job titles in his lifetime.
He married Rita Marie Bendel on the 17 July 1937 in South Bend, Indiana. They moved to Cleveland, where Carl lived, and through out the years, raised their 4 daughters. They had 8 grandchildren, which I am one of. My grandpa enjoyed playing pool, watching t.v. and drinking a nice iced mug of beer(which he always let us take a sip of). I wish he could see my brother today. John is a clone of grandpa. He looks and sounds just like him. Funny how those things get passed down.
