Dr. Allen was born in Florence, July 24, 1910, the eldest son of the late Dr. Edwin Marshall Allen and Celeste Langdon Blackwell. He was the grandson of the late James Allen, a Civil War veteran and one of the founding fathers of Florence, and his wife, Julia Marshall. He graduated from the University of South Carolina and then the Medical College of the State South Carolina in 1934. He completed his internship at Roper Hospital in Charleston before returning to Florence to join his father's practice.
He married Elizabeth Holliday of Galivants Ferry, September 17, 1937.
In 1982, he was presented with an Honorary Membership Award for Outstanding Service to the Community from the Florence County Medical Society. In 1984, he was honored by Florence County Medical Auxiliary for his more than 50 years in the medical profession.
Dr. Allen is survived by a son; Dr. Edwin Marshall Allen III; daughter-in-law, Jean Daniel Allen of Florence; six grandchildren, Celeste Blackwell Allen Padgett Kahn, Clyde Talmadge Padgett III, Dr. Edwin Allen Padgett of Tryon, NC, Dr. Margaret Allen Cates, Elizabeth Allen Commander and Jean Almand Allen; seven great-grandchildren, David Alan Kahn Jr., Celeste Marshall Allen Kahn, Clyde Talmadge Padgett Kahn, Katherine Elizabeth Padgett, Elsie Morrah Padgett, Joseph McDonald Commander V and Brent Clay Cates Jr.
He was predeceased by his wife and two daughters, Elizabeth Holliday Allen Padgett and Celeste Blackwell Allen.
