Joseph B. Steele Killed in Wreck West of Holt
Noted Crestview Man Was Active In Civic Affairs
CRESTVIEW, Nov. 19 (Special) Joseph B. "Jake" Steele. 43. prominent Crestview businessman, was killed Tuesday night near Holt when the car he was driving left rain-drenched highway and skidded into a pine tree.
The accident occurred at 10:40 p.m. about 1 mile west of Holt on U. S. 90, during a heavy downpour and marked the fourth traffic accident fatality in 11 days on Okaloosa highways.
Steele apparently lost control of the car while rounding a curve on the slippery black top according to the Highway Patrol office here. Patrolman Register Windham said the car left the road and skidded 127 feet sideways into a wire fence and pine tree. The rear of the car jackknifed into the tree throwing Steele through the rear door on the driver's side of the vehicle.
He was alive when the patrolman arrived but died immediately afterwards.
The back and front seats of the car were accordioned together from impact with the tree.
AUTO TOTAL LOSS
The car, a 1952 Dodge sedan, was a total loss said Windham.
County Judge Wilbur Osburn impaneled a coroner's Jury on the scene.
Steele was a well known figure in Okaloosa County being both active in politics and civic affairs.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Kiwanis, Knights of Pythias, Masons and a former city councilman. Recently, he had been Senator Richard Russell's campaign manager for the county. Formerly, he and his brother Henry had,been co-owners of the Steele Motor Co. here.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the First Baptist Church here with burial to follow in the Almarante Cemetery, Laurel Hill.
Reverends J. Titus Aldridge, J. M. McKnight, and W. O. Dean will officiate.
Sampsell Funeral Home, Crestview is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Steele is survived by his wife. Thelma, a daughter, Norma Frances, and a son, Alton, all of Crestview. His parents Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Steele, Laure Hill, a sister, Mrs. W. B. Reid, Cuthbert, Ga., and five brothers. Henry, Crestview, Cortez and J. G., Laurel Hill, and O. R. Steele. Pensacola.
