On October 12, 1935 Lawrence was married to Ida Zieman by Rev. Kumpf at St. John's Lutheran Church, Luana, Iowa. The couple had one daughter.
Lawrence served as a corporal in the U.S. Army from June 1943 to December 1945. After returning from the service he farmed, operated a farm service, and hauled milk in the Monona area. He retired to Luana in 1976. The couple moved to their home in Monona in 1978. He was a member of the American Legion Post #519 in Monona and Lutheran Brotherhood. He served on the Luana Lutheran Church council and Luana City Council.
