Mary Abigail Gibson was the daughter of Civil War Veteran Gideon Walker Gibson and Margaret Ann Beckner. She was born near Smileyberg, Kansas and went by the name of "Abbie". She married Henry Swing Smith in Douglass, Kansas on March 1, 1891.

They were the parents of 10 children but two (born in 1902 and 1906) died at or shortly after birth and were unnamed. Their other children were: Harry Manford, Mabel Esther, Carl Sidney, Ava Leona, Samuel Howard, Ruth Beatrice, Roy Gideon Gibson and Leland Eugene Smith.
