James wed Julia Theresa Crowley on October 2, 1906, in Lake County, yielding two industrious and independent daughters. The Combs family lived in the Big Valley, now known as Kelseyville, area of Lake County. Julia maintained a home in Lakeport until the late 1990's
James was a great great grandson of Doctor Thomas Hinde who took an active part in the American Revolutionary War serving as a Surgeon General with Patrick Henry's 1st Virginia Militia in various campaigns and battles.
