Virgil Venton Kerr, 92, of Hamlet, N.C., and formerly of Athens, died Saturday, July 30, 2011, at his residence.

He was a resident of Athens for more than 50 years, until he moved to Hamlet in 2000 to be near his daughter. A son of the late Otha M. Kerr Sr. and Allie May Harris Kerr, he was raised by Julia M. Kerr, his biological mother having passed away. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Otha M. "Jack" Jr., Quenton and Melvin Kerr; and one stepbrother, James Raymond Madison.

A veteran of World War II, serving in the 1881 Engineer Aviation Battalion Company B in the Pacific, he participated in three amphibious assault landings including Leyte. He was a member of Westview Baptist Church and retired from Alcoa in 1983.
