William Christian Rudolph Neumann was born to Heinrich Rudolph Neumann and Martjen (Martha) Schreiber in Rendsburg, Schleswig-Holstein. He left Germany in December 1882 aboard the ship Australia and arrived in New York on January 15, 1883. (In 1892 the German government charged him with either leaving the country illegally or for not serving in the military). He settled in Ft. Calhoun Township, Washington County, Nebraska though early records indicate that he worked for the railroad in Douglas County in the late 1890s.

On June 7, 1904 he married Marie Schneemeyer Buch in Florence, Nebraska. They lived and farmed near Ft. Calhoun until the late 1920s when they moved to Ft. Morgan having purchased property in that town in 1928.
