Sarah was the first wife of Hon. John Keep Boies who was a prominent and active citizen of Hudson for many years. John K. Boies was born in Blandford, Hampden County, Mass., Dec. 5, 1828, the son of Lemuel Boies and Sarah Keep. John K. Boies was educated in the Westfield Academy and had intended to pursue a law career, but in 1846, he went into the mercantile business with his brother, H. M. Boies, in Hudson, MI. In 1855, in company with his brother and Nathan Rude, he started the first bank in Hudson under the name of Boies, Rude, and Co. He was elected President of the village of Hudson in 1863 and was reelected in 1867. In 1864, he was elected to the Michigan legislature and was reelected at the end of his term. In 1868, he was elected to State Senate and was reelected in 1874. In 1871, he was appointed by Gov. Baldwin a member of the State Board of Control of Railroads and served four years. In 1878, he was reappointed as a member of that board by Gov. Croswell and held the position nine years. In 1880, he was appointed by President Garfield a member of the United States Board of Indian Commissioners, serving in this capacity until he resigned in 1885.In the campaign of 1882, he was the Republican candidate for Representative in Congress for the second district of Michigan. His defeat was due entirely to unfortunate differences between factions in the party. He served many years as trustee of the public schools and Congregational church of Hudson. October 22, 1852, he married Miss Sarah Amelia Spear of Hudson, who died January 5, 1870, leaving three children; Eva A., now Mrs. Frederick A. Wing of Seattle; Clarissa E. now Mrs. Herman V. C. Hart of Adrian (Both buried Adrian) and John Henry, who married Edna Bel Beachboard of Hudson and died at Denver, CO, Dec. 10, 1894. August 26, 1875, Mr. Boies was married to Mary W. Colton, daughter of Rev. T. G. Colton of Hudson. Mrs. Mary (Colton) Boies died Sept. 10, 1888, leaving one child, Bessie. Mr. Boies died at Washington, D. C. August 21, 1891.
