In 1845 in Newtown Sarah married physician Ralph Tyler Chaffee of Newtown. In 1850 they resided in Windsor, CT, where three years later Sarah died. Later that year, in Springfield, MA, Ralph married Sarah's sister, Aletta Ann "Lettie" (Hulst), at the home of his brother Alanson Chaffee. They resided in Windsor Locks, CT next door to Lettie's sister Ellen and her family and their widowed mother Jane.
