A Jacob area farmer was killed Friday in an accident involving an apparent malfunction in a hydraulic hoist on a truck.

Jackson County Coroner Harry Flynn said Milton Ahner, 59, was dead on arrival at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro shortly before 1 p.m.

Flynn said investigation shows Mr. Ahner apparently was strangled when his neck was caught under the bed of a dump truck he was working on.

Flynn said Mr. Ahner apparently was greasing under the bed of the truck, when the hydraulic hoist malfunctioned.

The coroner said the man was able to call for help, and his call was heard by his wife, Ruby. Flynn said Mrs. Ahner was unable to raise the hoist from her husband, and summoned a neighbor, Bill Brush, who lives about a mile away.

Flynn said Brush also was unable to raise the hoist but finally freed Mr. Ahner with the help of another neighbor.

The coroner said preliminary medical reports indicate Mr. Ahner was suffocated.

Mr. Ahner was born Jan. 27, 1914 in Altenburg, Mo., to Paul and Laura Hemmon Ahner. He was married Sept. 23, 1949 in Neunert, to Ruby Zerbst.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Neunert.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby; a son, Karl of Jacob; a daughter, Dorothy Behring of St. Louis, Mo; a brother, Herald of Gorham; and sisters, Irene Niederstadt of St. Louis and Mildred Ahner of Anna.

One brother preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today in Christ Lutheran Church in Neunert, with the Rev. W. O. Petzoldt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call at the Wilson Funeral Home in Ava until 11 a.m. Today.
