Petit, age 90, of DeKalb, IL formerly of Virgil, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2003, at the DeKalb County Nursing Home, DeKalb.
He was born December 31, 1912, at North Aurora, IL, the oldest son of Michael and Elizabeth (Feltes) Petit. In 1914, the family moved to Virgil, Burlington Township, where Herman grew up. His parents were devasted when, at the age of two, they discovered that Herman could not hear. They wondered how they would cope with raising a deaf child. They were led to St. John's School for the Deaf in Milwaukee and the decision was made that Herman should go there for his schooling. He was a very good student learning both academics and sign language, as well as excelling in sports.
After graduation, Herman's father was advised to bring Herman home to help on the farm. For nearly thirty years, Herman farmed with his father until 1955, when his parents moved to town. Over the years, Herman worked at a variety of jobs including; doing shoe repair, working for the Ridell Company in Chicago and then to Spring Valley where he was a woodworker until he retired in 1984. He continued to live in Spring Valley until 1993, when he moved to Sycamore to be closer to his family. In 1999, he went to make his home at the DeKalb County Nursing Home.
He is survived by two brothers, Frank (Rita) Petit of Aurora, IL and Peter (Earlene) Petit of Virgil, IL; three sisters, Sister Marie Petit and Sister Donna Petit, both of Milwaukee, WI, and Lorraine Miller, also of Virgil, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Elizabeth; two brothers, Father Clement Petit and Carl Petit; his baby brother, Michael and two babies in infancy; three sisters, Louise Zang, Regina Petit and Julia Dinges.
His visitation will be held from 3-8 p.m., Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at S.S. Peter & Paul Church, Meredith Rd., Virgil.
