Eliza Newton was born in Manchestrie , Lancashire, England. She sailed on the ship Camillus out of Liverpool England on April 6,1853 with her parents , James Leigh Newton and Eliabeth Blckburn , 8 year old sister Elizabeth, 4 year old sister Mary Isabella, 11/2 year old brother Hyram James, and her grandmother Isabella Collingson Blackburn. She was 6 years old.they arrived in Salt Lake City on 16 October 1853. It took them 3 months to arrive. Their trip across the plains by Ox team was slow. She was raised in a strict home as her father was very active in the church. Her family lived in a log cabin with a dirt roof. Often she and her sister would walk 3 miles for straw to make brooms , and braid hats. She helped to glean the fields . The times were tough as they did not know where their next meal would come from. When the grasshoppers and crickets were bad they would drag ropes up and down the garden rows to keep the garden from being eaten.. She married William Ridd on July 8, 1865 at the age of 18. Williams first wife Sarah was expecting their 6 child. Although her health was not good in her marriage she was blessed with 6 children Sarah Eliza , Elisabeth ,James Newton , Heber Chase ( my great grandfather ) Samuel ,and Lucy May. Her oldest child died at the age of 9 less than 2 weeks before Samuel was born. While her husband served a short mission to the Muddy his first wife became very ill, she was so sad and tried hard to keep her alive until her husband returned. She became mother to her living children. Together , William and Eliza worked hard money was scarce as in most pioneer homes. Eliza died the 29 of June 1880 in Salt Lake, at the young age of 33' leaving children raging ages of 10 to 11/2 years. Six months later Samuel died.at the age of 4. She was a kind and loving mother.
There has persisted through the years in reference to Eliza , the middle of Rocksey ..... And the less frequently used middle name of Snow. Leaving the question of her actual name . The records in England revealed neither name on her birth certificate. These names may have derived from a contemporary LDS women of note, Eliza Rocksey Snow, either from Eliza's own admiration of Sister Snow, or perhaps someone's likening her to this prominent lady.
