CLAUD CANUP-14 Sep 1971

Claud William Canup, Henry County employee for 26 years died Sunday night in an Atlanta hospital after an illness of four days. He served as Warden of the County Work Camp for two years until it was abolished in February of this year. Before that he had been loyal servant of the county for 24 years.

His passing came as a great shock to county officials. Commissioner Bud Kelley sad, "He will be missed."

Commission Chairman A. W. Austin state, "There was just one Claud Canup. He was the same man every day, and if he didn't like something about his job, he never let anyone know."

"Time on the job didn't mean anything to Claud", observed Mr. Austin, "he would get up at midnight to help. The people of this county are going to miss him."

Commissioner C. A. (Tip) Phillips said "Claud knew how to operate and repair every piece of equipment we had. He knew every road, bridge and mud hole in this county."

Mr. Canup felt bad Tuesday night according to his son, Tom, but got up Wednesday morning at five o'clock and started out in his truck for the job. According to information supplied the family before he lapsed into a coma late in the day Wednesday, Mr. Canup had only peripheral vision. Objects directly in form of him were completely indistinguishable.

Somehow he made it to the job, but was unable to stand up. Late Wednesday, he lapsed into a coma from which he never recovered. For three days he clung precariously to life with little encouragement given by physicians. Then Sunday, shortly after he appeared to rally a bit, He died.

Funeral services were Wednesday afternoon from the chapel of Carmichael Funeral Home. Interment was in High point Baptist Church Cemetery, Porterdale.

He is survived by one son, Tom, and his wife, the former Ada Pauline Lindsey.

He son Tom remembered Claud as "A man who never stopped. He worked Till he went to bed at 10 o'clock every night, then got up the next morning at five o'clock and went back to work. If he wasn't working at the camp, he was in his garden at home. He couldn't stop."
