Guy Exceen, aged 73 years, died suddenly at his home in this village last Sturday mourning about 7 o’clock while shoveling snow from the walk. When found he was in somewhat of a sitting posture, his hat off and the shovel was leaning against the house. Mr. Exceen had been to breakfast and was apparently as well as usual when he went out of doors. Death was due to heart trouble, from which he had suffered for several weeks.
Mr. Exceen had spent most of his life in this village, years ago working in the coppershops here. He was the owner of a good vineyard south of Lawton and was a successful grape grower. On the farm is a gravel pit and for years he has drawn gravel to Lawton for street and building purposes.
He had held many local offices, including those of village treasurer, marshal , and sexton of the cemetery. As a citizen and officer he was fearless and was not afraid to stand up for what he believed. He was strictly honest, very prompt in paying his debts, a hard worker, and very thorough in everything he undertook.
For years Mr. Exceen operated a snow plow for the village and on bitter cold mornings would be out early plowing the snow from the walks while many people were still asleep.
While Mr. Exceen will be missed from the community, his loss to the home will be very great, his aged wife having been unable to see for the past fifteen years.
Guy Eugene Exceen, son of Frederick and Mary Exceen was born in the state of Ohio, February 18, 1853, and passed to a higher life December 11, 1926, being at he time of his passing away 73 years,9 months and 23 days of age. He was the youngest of his family, who have all departed this life.
On December 24, 1875 he was united in marriage to Evaline Mahard of Lawton, Mich. To them three children were born Myrtie, William F. and Pearl.
His entire life since he was a young man has been spent in Lawton.
He had been a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge of Paw Paw for over forty years, and the Rebekahs of Lawton for a number of years.
Besides his wife he leaves a son, Wm. F. and a daughter Pearl, also nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were held from the home Tuesday afternoon, Rev G.W. Maxwell of the M.E. church officiating. The services at the grave were in charge of the I.O.O.F. lodge of Paw Paw. Burial was at Oak Grove cemetery.
