Korean War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Carrollton, Mississippi, he served as Sergeant in Company C, 23rd Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, US Army. At Kujangdong, Korea, November 26, 1950, Sergeant Pittman volunteered to lead his squad in a counterattack to regain terrain lost in an earlier engagement. Moving toward the position, he was wounded but he continued to lead and direct his men against the hostile standpoint. When an enemy grenade was thrown in the midst of his squad Sergeant Pittman threw himself on the grenade and absorbed its burst with his body. When medical reached him, his first request was to be informed as to how many of his men were hurt. For extraordinary heroism, he was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman in June 1951.
