Obituary, The Oklahoman, January 21, 1942
With a short solemn service at the Rose Hill Cemetery, the body of Lieutenant Baird H. Markham, Jr. was buried Tuesday afternoon as hundreds of his boyfriend friends and Army comrades stood by. Army uniforms were prominent in the crowd which gathered at the graveside, but Tuesday's services were primarily religious. Militar services were held Monday morning at Camp Barkeley, Texas, where the 25-year old former Oklahoma City youth had been stationed as adjutant of Headquarters Detachment, First Battalion, of the 180th Infantry.

Dr. Percy Nickless, Des Moines, and Reverend Moody Nicholson, Chouteau, were in charge of the services. Both had known Lieutenant Markham as a boy in Oklahoma City. Bearers, all officers from Camp Barkeley, were Lt Colonel Hugh Askew; Major William C. Parnell; First Lieutenant Grant Lord; First Lieutenant Paul W. Reeves, Second Lieutenant Harvey F. Allen, and Second Lieutenant James D. Keirsey. Before the coffin was lowered in the grave, the large American flag which had covered it was removed and presented to his mother, Mrs. Markham, by Lieutenant Allen. The flag presentation represented a tribute from the President of the United States and from all Army Officers. Two buglers played taps to close the services.

The body of the 25-year old officer, who was killed Saturday night in a motor car crash near Camp Barkeley, was brought to Oklahoma City Tuesda under a military escort from the camp. He was the son of Major General and Mrs. Baird H. Markham, New York City. General Markham, a former Oklahoma City and Ponca City business leader, once commanded the 45th division now stationed at Camp Barkeley.
