He was a son of Major General Benjamin William Sheridan Cabell,a hero of the War of 1812. Dr.Cabell was married to Jane Bretney Lanier from Prince George County Virginia, but there were no children from this marriage. Jane would later marry James Barroll Washington and would have four children with him.

A medical doctor, he was serving in the US Army in Florida during the Seminole Indian War, and died in Florence, Alabama, from disease.
