Dr. Pelton spent his youth in Coldwater, Michigan and graduated from medical school at the University of Michigan at An Arbor, class of 1866. He served as a medical cadet in the U.S. Army from March 1864 to May 1865. He then practiced medicine for thirty years in Matagorda County, Texas. He also owned a large cattle ranch in the same county. There is a rather large tombstone with his name on it in the Old Cemetery in Matagorda but he is not buried there. After the death of his second wife, Catherine Duffy Pelton, he moved to Los Angeles, California where he became a large real estate owner.
