Obituary for John "Jack" Wood


IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Jack Arthur Wood, Jr., age 81, a funeral director and longtime resident of Idaho Falls, passed away July 4, 2005, at The Gables Assisted Living Center of congestive heart failure. He was under the care of Aspen Home Health & Hospice.

He was born December 28, 1923, in Murray, Utah, in his grandfather's funeral home, to John Albert "Jack" and Blanche Jenkins Wood. His family moved to Idaho Falls in 1925, where his father started the Wood Funeral Home.

Jack attended schools in Idaho Falls, graduating from Idaho Falls High School in 1942. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he was stationed at several bases, including the Philippines. Upon his return he briefly attended Idaho State University before serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Northern California and Oregon.

Following his mission he married Marjorie Lou Heileson March 16, 1949, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. After their marriage they moved to San Francisco, where Jack attended the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science. When he graduated, Jack went to work with his father and his brother, Ralph, at the Wood Funeral Home until his retirement in 1995.

In 1995 Jack and his wife, Marjorie, were called to serve a mission at the Idaho Falls Family History Center. Jack served in the Family History Center until 2001. He loved working at the Center and made many friends.

He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving twice as a Bishop, as a counselor in the Stake Presidency, member of the High Council, and as ward organist. He also loved working with the priest quorum in the Aaronic Priesthood.

Jack was an active Democrat, serving as county coroner for three terms, state senator from Bonneville County for two terms and State Chairman of Democrats for Ronald Reagan in 1984. He was also active in city politics, serving on the Idaho Falls City Council for eight years.

Jack enjoyed fishing, golfing, hiking Table Rock and especially skiing, a hobby he started at age 53.
He also did humorous readings as a hobby.

Son: Richard (Kristin) Wood of Idaho Falls, ID;
Daughter: Amy (Alan) Adamson of Idaho Falls, ID;
Son: George (Carrie) Wood of Highland, UT;
Brother: Ralph (Margaret) Wood of Idaho Falls, ID;
Sister: Annette Wood of Idaho Falls, ID;
Brother: Robert (Dixie) Wood of Salt Lake City, UT;
32 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two infant sons, Jack and John Wood.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 7, 2005 at the Idaho Falls LDS 7th Ward Chapel (955 Memorial Drive),with Bishop David Holland officiating.

The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home (273 N. Ridge Ave.)and Thursday for one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery with Military Rites by the Bonneville County Veterans Memorial Team.
