James Monroe Ches(t)nut was the eldest of 2 sons born to John Chesnut and Ann Eliza (Pippen/Pippin)in 1860, Washington Co, not too long before his father was purported to have gone to war.

He married Elizabeth (Hays)in June 1870 in Vernon, Washington Co, FL. He and Elizabeth had 5 children who lived to adulthood in and around Washington Co: Rev. John Henry Chesnut (#105705918), Ida (Chesnut) Slay, Annie Liza (Chesnut) Davis (#31538655), Needham Ennice Chesnut, and Fred Leonard Chesnut(#65428423).

A few years after Elizabeth died, James married Gracie White (no issue).

He is buried alongside Elizabeth at Hardlabor Cemetery.
