AUGUSTUS M. STRATTAN

Augustus was the third son of Stephen Thatcher Strattan and Nancy Jane Lauder [her parents used the Lawder spelling]. He was born in 1845 and died in 1883. [As this memorial was originally created, Nancy included here a sentence saying that Augustus had entered Civil War service on the same day as his father and his brother David and in the same unit; the service of the father and brother is verified in records, including the Illinois Archives (by the spelling Stratton in both cases), but service by Augustus cannot be verified, nor is military service mentioned in the printed obituary at the right. However, an obituary for his older brother Rynd (the text of which is on Rynd's Find A Grave memorial page) refers to their father's having gone into military service with two of his sons; if that were true, Augustus would have had to be the second son.] He married Anna Mary Waggoner (date and place unknown). She was born June 23, 1845, and died October 31, 1890, at the age of 45.

He was a dry good merchant in the family business.

He served as an alderman for the city of Mt. Vernon, IL, in 1882 and 1883. In 1880 he was elected by the Democrats to run for the Office of State Senator but lost to the Republican Candidate. [Note: Perhaps he lost in 1880 as this says, but he was elected in 1886 and took his seat on 5 Jan 1887 in the Thirty-fifth General Assembly as an Illinois State Senator; he also served in the Thirty-sixth General Assembly in the same office.]

He belonged to the K of H Lodge #683 organized on September 5, 1878. Other charter members were Rynd Lauder Strattan [again, Rynd's grandparents used the Lawder spelling, and it is not known which spelling he used for his middle name] and Dr. Samuel Crew.

Augustus and Anna had issue of six children: Roslin M. Strattan born in 1871, Mary P. Strattan born 1872, Homer S. Strattan 1875, Nancy G. Strattan born 1878 and Margaret E. Strattan 1885. One child deceased.

He and Anna are both buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, IL.

The following is a different obituary, this one from "The Breeze," a newspaper in Mt. Vernon, Illinois:

Ex-Senator Strattan Dead.

Augustus M. Strattan died Monday morning at 3 o'clock at his home, 419 South Sixth street. His death was the result of Brights disease from which he had been a long sufferer.

He was 58 years of age, having been born in Highland county, Ohio, May 20, 1845. In 1857 he came with the family of his father, the late Capt. S. T. Stratton [sic], to Mt. Vernon, and has since resided here. Several years later he was married to Miss Anna M. Waggoner. Of this union six children were born, all now living at the parental home. Mrs. Strattan preceded her husband to the grave about thirteen years ago.

Mr. Strattan, or "Gus" as he was more familiarly known, had a wider circle of friends and acquaintances than perhaps any other citizen in the county, he having been actively connected in the business life of Mt. Vernon for over 40 years. Of late years he has been ingaged [sic] in the implement business in this city. He was several times elected a member of the city council, and in 1886 was elected by the democrats to the office of state senator for four years.

Funeral services were held at the First M. E. church at 4:30 Tuesday afternoon under the direction of the pastor, Rev. Harmon, with interment at Oakwood Cemetery. The Breeze extends to the bereaved family and relatives of the deceased its deepest sympathy in this their hour of trouble and sorrow.

Thank you

Augustus and Mary Stratton had another son Roscoe Wagner Stratton, he was probably the other child, but he was not deceased, he lived un February 21, 1958, died in Missoula, MT.
