Curtis C. Johnson, 99, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2013. He was born in Morehead, Kentucky in 1914 and by age 12 he was driving a Model T Ford ice truck for Highly Ice Company. He graduated from Middletown High School in 1933 as number one in the state in biology scholarship and was the winner of the Foundation in Industrial Arts Award as well as the Oglesby Barns Award for outstanding citizenship.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings.
Curtis is survived by his wife of 77 years, Erna (McBrayer) Johnson; daughters, Roberta Collins Thomas (Ronald), Janet Krietenstein (Keith); son, Vernon Johnson (Nancy); 8 grandsons; and 15 great-grandchildren.
His career included the Atomic Bomb project and construction and supervision of the first transcontinental natural gas pipeline in the US. Along with his family he lived and worked in most of the states east of the Mississippi. Curt's skill base ranged from the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment to the intricacies of antique clock repair. All that knew him remember his humor and will not forget his deep faith in the Lord. He was an accomplished guitarist, story teller, Bible teacher and beloved father and grandfather.
Curtis' family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. William Hardesty for his dedication and compassion through the years.
A brief service will be held on Monday, August 26th at 1:00PM at Alexander Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel of Remembrance, officiated by Rev. Lynn Marino with burial following.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to VNA Charlier Hospice, 610 E. Walnut St., Evansville, IN 47713, who provided kindness, care and peace during his final day.
