Governor of Oahu. Immigrating to Hawaii at the age of 16, Cleghorn began his mercantile business with his father in 1851 and continued to grow his business interests throughout the Hawaiian islands by 1855. He first married Elizabeth Pauahi Lapeka and they had three daughters: Rose Kaipuala Cleghorn, Helen Mani'iailehua Cleghorn and Annie Pauai Cleghorn. His 1870 marriage to Princess Miram Kapili Likelike, daughter of High Chief Caesar Kaluaiku Kapa'akea and sister to David Kamaka'eha, the future King Kalakaua I, increased his prominence. By this marriage, he was father of Victoria Ka'iulani Kalaninuiahilapalapa Kawekiu i Lunalilo Cleghorn, better known as the Crown Princess Ka'iulani. Active in civic affairs, he was instrumental in the founding of Kapi'olani Park and served as the first president of Queens Hospital. In 1899 he adopted a son, Thomas Alexander Kaulaahi Cleghorn.
