Edith Marie “Joyce” Akers, 89, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, July 21, 2011 of natural causes. She was born on September 12, 1921 in Rock Falls, Illinois to Leon and Gladis Andreas.

A recent article in "The News Review" celebrated Joyce finally receiving her diploma this year (she had missed getting her high school diploma in Indiana because of a scarlet fever outbreak in her family).

She loved being a homemaker, sewing ballet costumes for Ralph Patterson and a Seattle dance company. She worked as an aide at Fullerton grade school, and volunteered at the Friendly Kitchen. Joyce was always ready for company with a pot of soup on the stove. She baked the best pies and homemade chicken and noodles.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Everett Eugene Akers in 1992; three brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by her children: daughter, Shari (Jesse) Lowman; sons, Terry (Pam) Akers; Everett (Cheryll) Akers, and Rance (Deloris) Akers. Grandchildren, Ann Mintz; Mark Lowman; Sabrina Lowman; Aaron Akers; Travis Akers; Erika Morse; Heidi Paul; Daniel Akers; and Makinna Akers. 12 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews in Indiana, California, Washington and Oregon.

She will be missed by all family, neighbors, friends, including Elsa Richetts, Gerty Eaton and Pete and Lou Butts.

A funeral service will be held at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses on Wednesday, July, 27, 2011 at 10 a.m. Pastor Andy Middlekauff from RAC to preside. Memorials may be offered to The Friendly Kitchen at 1033 N.E. Post St. Roseburg, Oregon 97470. A special thanks to Amedisys Hospice, Dr. Tim Powell, Dr. John Powell, Mercy Medical Center, the staff at Rosehaven Nursing Center, Michelle Floyd and Aaron Akers for the support of many nights at the hospital.
