James Hall Bell was the seventh of ten known children of Barclay Townsend Bell Sr. (1850-1930) and Lilian Grafton Alsworth (1855-1953), who married 05 May 1874 at Scotts Bluff, Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana.

James married Elizabeth (went by Betty) Patterson (c1885-???) on 22 Dec 1922 at San Diego, San Diego County, California (some records show they married at El Paso, Texas, which is correct?). James and Betty had no known children.

Betty is thought to have died in California and to be buried there. Did she remarry? In 1930 James and Betty were living at San Diego, San Diego County, California with James listed as a land appraiser for San Diego County. James was also an ordained minister, having graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary. He was a scout with Pershing's Army when the U.S. Army chased Pancho Villa into Mexico. He later was a minister at El Paso, Texas. He was a Captain of Artillery during World War I. He came to San Diego in 1922, and in 1935 was appointed City Social Welfare Director.
