Fort Benton Resident, Neal Archer, Dies
Fort Benton--Neal J. Archer, 74, Fort Benton, died Saturday at Fort Benton Hospital following an extended illness. Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Benton Funeral Home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Fort Benton.
He was born in Aiken, Minn., Mar. 9, 1891. He came with his parents to Montana in 1900, later moving to Fort Benton. He suffered an attack of polio in 1910 and had been in a wheelchair since then. He operated a taxi for 20 years in the area and served as a mail carrier on the Egly Star Route for 20 years, and he also operated a repair and radiator shop for many years here.
He was the public administrator for Chouteau for the past 26 years.
He was past Noble Grand of the Benton Odd Fellows Lodge No. 59, Past Chief Patriarch of Crescent Encampment No. 14, present Captain of Patriarch Militant of Canton No. 11, and a member of Rebekah Lodge No. 105. He received the highest honor of Odd Fellows in 1952 when he was awarded the Decoration of Chivalry.
He married Fay Scott July 14, 1916. Survivors include a son, Royal S. Archer, Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Mrs. Alva E. Ayers, Fort Benton; two brothers, Reuben, Fort Benton, David, Hoquiam, Wash.; two sisters, Margery Smith, Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Iris Cooper, Havre; five grandchildren.
