In Berkeley he farmed a 150 acre plot, bounded by Sacramento, Addison, San Pablo, and Cedar. He married Anne Dunnigan, a daughter of Patrick Dunnigan (who farmed 150 acres between University and the Oakland border).
According to Hal Johnson, writing in 1943, Curtis was the first anglo farmer to til the soil in Berkeley and the first man in Berkeley to build a mansion (on the north side of University, right by what's currently Curtis St).
Johnson also wrote: "In the high ceiling front room of the Curtis mansion, not in the Curtis barn as generally believed, were held the first Catholic services in Berkeley. It was in the year 1877. Father Gaul Gualco, who was stationed at the San Pablo village church, came over to sing Mass."
