She was born on May 31, 1927 in Bristol, England, the daughter of Edward and Emily (Parsons) Hare.
Phyllis met Jimmy Lyle, an American GI soldier at a carnival in Bristol during World War II. They wed on January 10, 1948 in Lowell, Massachusetts and resided there until after the birth of their second daughter. The family then moved to Seattle, later to Oak Harbor, and eventually settling in Anacortes in 1954, raising eight children.
Phyllis was very active with her St. Mary Parish in Anacortes. She was an avid gardener and loved doing various crafts from knitting, crocheting, macramé, and doll-making. Phyllis loved traveling, writing poetry and was an avid reader. She also taught Catechism at St. Mary, Bible Study classes, as well as knitting and crocheting classes.
Phyllis loved visiting residents at the local nursing homes and helping people in need within the community.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 50 years, James "Jimmy" Lyle, Sr.; two grandsons: Rodney Morrison, of Juneau, AK, and Liam Lyle, of Yelm, WA.
She is survived by sons: James, Jr. (Sharon) Lyle, of Chicago, IL, and Charles (Kim) Lyle, of Yelm, WA; daughters: Jean Morrison, of Federal Way, WA, Mary Sloan, of Kihei, Maui, HI, Deborah (Tom) Daly of Waimea, Kauai, HI, Theresa (George) Peters, of Federal Way, WA, Kathleen (Ariel) Valencia, of Spanaway, WA, and Angela (Steve) Sauer, of Anacortes, WA; daughter-in-law, Chris Lyle, of Kent, WA; 26 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sister, Joan Black, of Portishead, Bristol, England. She will be greatly missed by her family.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Sunday, July 17, 2011 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Anacortes. Rosary will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 18, 2011 at St. Mary Catholic Church followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. and a reception at the Father Auer Center.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Fernhill Cemetery in Anacortes.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church in Anacortes.
Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and the San Juan Islands.
