Oldest Citizen Passes Away
"Aunt Alice" Fry Would Have Been 103 Years Old Next February 6.
Mrs. Alice Fry, 102 years old, Clay County's oldest citizen died late last Saturday at eh home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Ellington, between Arley and Paradise communities. She would have been 103 years old on next February 6.
AA few years ago Mrs. Fry received an injury to one of her legs and never was able to walk much afterwards.
Miss Alice Ward was born near Grace, Ky., February 6, 1837. She came to Missouri to make her home with the Milan McGee family near Kansas City when she was 18 years old. She late lives with her uncle and it was during this time that she assisted in caring for a toll between Kansas City and Westport.
She was married to Edwin R Fry in 1865. They made their home in Jackson County were they owned and operated a flout mill on land which is now a part of Swope Park. At the time Kansas City was only a trading post - Westport Landing.
Several years later they purchased a farm in Clinton County. She was the mother to three children and has six grandchildren. She has been a faithful member of the Pleasant Hill Primitive Baptist Church, near Lily in Clinton County, since 1888.
Mr. Fry died in 1905. Since then "Aunt Alice" as she was known to many, made her home with her daughter.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Pleasant Hill Primitive Baptist church. The Rev James Jones officiated.
