S.L. VOCALIST SUCCUMBS IN HOSPITAL OF ILLS—Mrs. Blanche Shewell Herbert, well-known vocalist, died Thursday in a local hospital of natural causes.
Mrs. Herbert was a soloist with the Tabernacle Choir at the age of 16. She studied at the McCune School of Music under the late Anthony C. Lund and John J. McClellan. Her training continued under Oscar Sengar, William Landon, and Pietre Cimini.
She sang with some of the leading bands and orchestras of the country. A soloist for summer concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, she was contracted to sing on the West Coast and with theatrical enterprises. She was a staff artist for KPO in San Francisco and KFI in Los Angeles.
Mrs. Herbert was one of the first performers to sing on KSL when it was KFPT. She was soloist for the America and Salt Lake Theater and was featured on KDYL.
To help young people develop their talents for future careers was her hobby. She had directed choral groups and sung in many wards.
Born in St. Helens, Lancashire, England, she was a daughter of John and Mary Jane Shewell. July 24, 1914, she came to Utah with her parents from Winnipeg, Canada, as a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a member of the Browning Ward.
Survivors are her husband, Lee E. Herbert and three brothers, jack Shewell, Ogden, and Harry and Alec Shewell, both of Salt Lake City; one sister, Ruth S. Lawrence, Salem, Utah.
