Son of John K. and Elizabeth (Rauch) Gaugler. Married Ida M. Mertens, daughter of C Fredk. and Carrie (Patterson) Mertens, 30 December 1916, in Hamilton County, Ohio. Married Alma F. Weart, daughter of James T. and Anna E. (Gibson) Weart, 18 December 1926, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Gaugler was a trumpeter for John Philip Sousa's band for 18 years and traveled the world. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and was wounded in action in Cuba. Gaugler also played with Arthur Pryor's band and was in the pit at the New York Hippodrome for 12 years and, taught music for three years at the Washington, DC College of Music. He died at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Philadelphia.
