After that he retired to Brainerd where he formed a partnership with his brother K. S. Paine and J. C. Flynn under the name of Paine & Flynn, wholesale and retail dealers in livestock and dressed meats. Reuben was Deputy Sheriff in 1888. Paine, Reuben H.

Was born in Victory, Cayuga county, New York, on the 27th of November, 1846. At the age of eighteen years he went to McHenry county, Illinois, and after a residence of four years there, came to Lake City, Minnesota, and was farming there for two years. His next move was to Long Prairie, Todd county, where he conducted the grocery business until 1872 [sic], when he came to Brainerd, and after six years of active business, went to Little Falls and engaged in the mercantile business, but returned again to Brainerd after one year. He then formed a partnership with his brother, K. S. Paine, and J. C. Flynn, the firm being known as Paine Brothers & Flynn, wholesale and retail dealers in live stock and dressed meats. (History of the Upper Mississippi Valley, Winchell, Neill, Williams and Bryant, Minnesota Historical Company, Minneapolis: 1881; p. 652)

                Death of R. H. Paine

On Saturday morning last, about 10 o'clock, at his home in this city, R. H. Paine, one of Brainerd's most prominent and influential citizens, departed this life, his death bed surrounded by those most dear to him on earth. The cause of his sudden death in the prime of life and manly strength was pneumonia. He had been afflicted with a severe cold nearly all winter, but was able to be about and attend to business until Wednesday March 3rd, when he was stricken down with the dread disease that destroyed his life. His death was a great shock to his hosts of friends throughout the city, who, although aware of his illness, were led to believe that the worst was over and he was convalescing. Mr. Paine was an upright, honorable and respected citizen, and had the esteem of every one who knew him. He was active and enterprising, and could always be depended upon to take any active part in anything that had for its object the material and moral advancement of the community, hence his death will be greatly deplored in business circles, as well as in his family circle, where he was a kind and living husband and a just and affectionate father.
Deceased was born Nov. 27th, 1846, in Victory, Cayuga county, N. Y., consequently he was over 50 years of age at his death. Here he spent his boyhood days, removing to Illinois in 1865. In 1867 he was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Kerns [sic], and for over 80 [sic] [30] years she has been his constant and loving companion, sharing alike his joys and sorrows. In 1869 Mr. Paine came to Lake City, Minn., where he resided until 1871. In that year he moved with his family to Long Prairie, Todd county, and in 1878 [sic] came to Brainerd, and he has resided here ever since except a couple of years in the latter part of the 70's when he lived in Little Falls. The early years of his residence here he was engaged conducting a meat market, but for the last 10 years he has been in the plumbing business. He was very active in politics, being a strong Republican, and always taking an active part in advancing the interests of his party. He has been alderman two or three times, and member of the board of education. He was an active and influential member of the I. O. O. F., and also belonged to the Royal Arcanum [a fraternal life insurance benefit society] and J. O. A. M., all of which lodges, with the board of trade, of which he was a member, attended the funeral in a body.
The funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 16th, at the First Congregational church, Rev. D. D. McKay, of the Presbyterian church, conducting the services. His remains were interred in Evergreen Cemetery, followed to their last resting place by such a large concourse of friends and neighbors that only a small portion could gain admittance to the church. Out of respect for the deceased all the business houses in the city were closed Tuesday afternoon during the funeral.
His faithful wife and seven children, besides his aged mother and two brothers, N. M. Paine, of this city, and K. S. Paine, of the state of Washington, survive him. His mother lives with N. M. Paine. His oldest daughter, Mrs. C. J. Husted, lives in Guatemala, Central America, and, of course, was unable to be present at the funeral. The eldest son, Shelly, is married, and lives here, while the other five children, two boys and three girls live at home. (Brainerd Dispatch, 19 March 1897, p. 4, c. 6)

The 7th surviving child is Leigh A. Paine. In the 1942 WW II Draft Registration, he says he was born Nov. 27, 1880 in Little Falls, MN. His wife's name is Isabella and he's the owner of Paine's Drug Store in Sacramento. California death index has Leigh A. Paine, d. 25 Aug 1972 in Sacramento. Burial location not yet known.
