Edward J Smith Sr 88, of 1403 Castlewood SW, Canton, died Tuesday at 5:30 pm in Aultman hospital, Canton, where he had been a patient one week.
Mr Smith was born in Allegheny county near Pittsburgh and spent most of his life near Sixteen, west of Massillon.
Mr Smith was a retired coal miner and painter and was active in local bands, having directed bands at Stanwood, Brewster, and for the Milta lodge.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs Ila Weiford of Canton; 4 sons, Dr Charles A Smith of Rochester NY; David Smith Sr of Massillon; Dr Clarence V Smith of Canton and Edward J Smith of Parma; 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. His wife Anna mae, died in 1957 and a son John G died in 1958.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 2pm at the Arnold-Lynch funeral home. The Rev. John B Barker, pastor of Calvary Methodist church at Canton, will officiate. Interment will be made in Sixteen cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home tonight until 9.
