PERRY ELZEY IS CALLED BY DEATH - Well-Known Civil War Veteran Dies at His Home Here This Morning
Perry Elzey, age 80, Civil war veteran, a lifelong resident of this city and a splendid citizen of this community, died this morning at 7:30 o'clock at his home on Sixth street, following an extended illness. The direct cause of death was attributed to paralysis, from which he suffered a stroke last fall and again about three weeks ago, and infirmities.
Augmenting his sufferings was the affliction of blindness, which befell Mr. Elzey about three years ago. He bore his sufferings with patience and was always in a cheerful mood and thankful for what blessings he had received. One of his answers to expressions of sympathy over his affliction with his eyes, was, "Well I'm thankful for the 78 years of good sight I had."
Stricken Last Month
The Friday before Memorial day, when the thoughts of the country were turned to those brave heroes who fought for the Union in 1864 and 1865, Mr. Elzey suffered another stroke of paralysis which left him speechless and, since that time, life slowly ebbed from his frail body. Wednesday morning, the death sleep came upon him and the end was expected at any minute. At 7:30 o'clock this morning he peacefully passed away.
When only 17 years old, Mr. Elzey enlisted as a private in Company I, 89 Regiment, Indiana Infantry, and served throughout the way. In the battle of Nashville, which was fought on Nov. 15 and 16, 1864, he was injured by a shell. He was confined to the army hospital for some time, but again saw active service and was not discharged until the close of the war, in July, 1865.
Native of Adams County
Mr. Elzey was born in Root township, Adams county, on February 4, 1846. With the exception of two years, during which time he lived in Fort Wayne, he has been a resident of this city and county. For the past thirty-five years, he has been a resident of this city. On May 12, 1874, he was married to Miss Edna A. Butler, of this city. Mr. and Mrs. Elzey had the pleasure of observing their fiftieth wedding anniversary with their children, two years ago last May.
Mr. Elzey is survived by his wife, six children, and three brothers. The children are: Mrs. E. O. Burkholder, of Cleveland; Mrs. A. H. Entsminger, of Warren, Ohio; Mart Elzey, of Orion, Ill; Mrs. Frank Krick, Ben H. Elzey and Fred M. Elzey, of this city. His brothers are, Allison Elzey, of Hartford City and Thomas and William Elzey, of this city. Three children died in infancy. Two brothers and three sisters also preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock from the residence on Sixth street, the Rev. A. R. Fledderjohann, officiating in the place of Rev. Somerville Light, pastor of the First Methodist church of this city, of which Mr. Elzey was a member. Burial will be made in the Decatur cemetery and it is likely that a military service will be held at the home or at grave.
