George D. McCammon of Phillips, South Dakota and former resident of Oxford, Iowa, died at 10 p.m. Sunday at the Masonic Sanitarium at Bettendorf, Iowa, after a lingering illness. He had been a patient in Davenport for the last two months. The body was brought to Oxford Monday evening, and funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock with interment in the Oxford cemetery. Mr. McCammon was born June 9, 1865 and was a member of Canopy Lodge No. 290, A. F. & A. M. of Oxford. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Kenneth and George D. McCammon, Jr, and one daughter, Miss Mae McCammon all of Phillips, S. D.
Obituary published in The Oxford Leader, Oxford, Iowa on Thursday, 5 April 1928 on page 1.
Note: His death certificate stated his birthplace as Phillips, South Dakota but every US Census Record shows birthplace as Iowa. The 1885 Iowa State Census shows his birthplace as Johnson County Iowa. His marriage license to Mary Helen Noonan shows his birthplace as Oxford, Iowa. The 1925 South Dakota Census shows his birthplace as Iowa. Since he was alive when all of these other records were created, I believe he was actually born in Iowa. He was a brother of my Great-Grandfather, John Henry McCammon.
