David Monroe Bates was born 18 May 1839 in Alabama, probably Autauga County. His parents were James M and Levinia Johnson Bates. His parents died when he was young. David Monroe Bates enlisted in the Civil War on August 26, 1862 in Independence, Autauga County, Alabama. David was a Private in Company E 53 Regiment Alabama Partisan Rangers (53rd Alabama Cavalry Regiment, aka; 53rd Alabama Mounted Infantry; aka; 53rd Alabama Partisan Rangers.)

He married Martha Rebecca Poole on 08 Nov 1864 in Autauga County, Alabama. Their children were William Bates, born on 09 Feb 1866 and died in 1880; Mary Bates, born 15 Mar 1868 and died in 1880; Lula Bates, born 18 Dec 1869; General Lowell Bates, nicknamed Bud born 01 Aug 1872; Thomas Jefferson Bates, born Jan. 25, 1875; Barbie Bates born 17 Mar 1878 and died in 1880; and James Bates born 23 Aug 1879 in Tipton County, Tennessee. In 1870 the family lives in Autauga County, Alabama. By 1880 they live in Tipton County, Tennessee where at least one child was born. Around 1880, 3 children died. They are probably buried in Tennessee. By 1883 they lived in Arkansas and David Monroe Bates drowned in a pond at his sawmill in Arkansas, probably Arkansas City, Arkansas. It is unknown where he is buried

His wife and children moved to Texas in 1886, from Arkansas.
