Death of Mrs. Martha A. Young
Mrs. Martha A. Young died Friday afternoon at 3:45 at her home, 1525 South street, after an illness of long standing. She had suffered from rheumatism for many months and was confined to her room. Shortly after noon Friday she had a paralytic attack and then sank peacefully to rest. She died sitting in her chair.
Mrs. Young was born in Richmond, Kentucky, November 7, 1831, and was in her seventy-ninth year. In 1851 she came to Lexington and in April of 1852 was married to the late Dr. G.W. Young. There were nine children born to this union, five of whom survive. They are Albert Young and Barnett Young of Lexington, Misses Juliet and Elizabeth of Lexington and Mrs. Robert Barnett of Winton.
When a girl Mrs. Young united with the Presbyterian church and her life was one of consecration. Quiet and un-ostentatious in her manner, she was ever devoted to her duty, and only those who were thrown intimately with her knew the strength and sweetness of her character. In the years she was a constant sufferer she never lost interest in the activities of her church and participated in its works even after her malady became so severe that she was compelled to remain at her home. Many quiet prayer meetings were held there and she was a constant source of inspiration to her friends who gathered there.
It was meet that such a life end with such peace and quiet, and, though her many friends will sorely miss her, they can but be thankful that she has been let to the haven where all is joy and light.
The funeral was held from the home Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. Dr. E.C. Gordon conducted the services and interment was in Machpelah.
