Vic Riffe Dies From Gas Burns
Popular Voc-Aug Teacher Had Made Good Record In Noble Schools Since '38.
Victor Riffe, 30, former Carnegie boy and vocational agriculture instructor at Noble for the past five years, was fatally burned in a gasoline fire near Ringling Thursday. He died in an Ardmore hospital about 9:00 p.m.
Riffe was working with a road building crew and was helping refuel a blacktop mixer when the accident occurred. It is believed that some of the gasoline may have come in contact with hot pipes and ignited. The machine was not in operation at the time.
Other workmen said Riffe jumped back but did not escaped the blazing fuel. He rolled upon the ground and a companion cut the burning clothing away but he received burns that covered 80 percent of his body, hospital attendants said.
Mr. Riffe went to Noble in September, 1938 following his graduation with a bachelor of science degree in vocational agriculture from Oklahoma A. and M. college.
"I have never known a person who has devoted more of his own time to the service of others than Mr. Riffe." Bryan Waid, Noble superintendent of schools told a Norman Transcript reporter. Other civic leaders pointed out the instructor had made an enviable in in aiding the development of the farming program in the Noble vicinity.
Final rites were held at the Noble highschool auditorium at 10:00 a.m. Saturday. Rev. H.M. James, Norman, and Rev. J.P. King, pastor of the Noble Methodist church were in charge of the service. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Noble under auspices of the Masonic lodge of which organization he was a member. Members of the FFA class were bearers.
Born near Holister, Mr. Riffe would have been 31 years old December 7. He attended grade school near Davidson and graduated from highschool at Carnegie. He attended college at Cameron two years before going to Stillwater. He was married to Miss Ruth Highsmith, Noble home economics teacher, in 1939. His wife and a little daughter, Judy Jane, are among his survivors. Others are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.H. Riffe, Carnegie; his sisters, Mrs. Hugh Clay, Okmulgee; Mrs. Rudell Taylor and Miss Ida Vae Riffe, Carnegie; and five brothers, :fc. Wm. J. Riffe, Camp Howze, Texas; Leverne E. Riffe, Stroud, Homer Riffe, Garland, Texas; Pfc. Pete H. Riffe, Denton, Texas, and R.Blair Riffe, Carnegie.
Friends attending the funeral from this community were Mr. and Mrs. Garland Giles, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Posey, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Posey, Mrs. J.F. Taylor, Mrs. Spudds Widener, Mrs. Dick Evans, T.C. Colwell, Jas. Brintle and Clarence Saddler.
