Son of Hain Jans Dieken and Hilke Sonjes. According to his marriage record, he was born in "Osterla", Prussia - probably in Osterloh, near the village of Bosel in present day lower Saxony. He married Afina Adalaide Luhn, 9 May 1862 in Visquard, Ostfriesland, Hannover, Prussia. The young family immigrated to America aboard the ship "Asia" - arriving in New York on 9 Nov 1866 with suckling babe, Hilke - thereafter settling in Minonk, Illinois. He and his wife, Afina, were parents of 8 children:
Hilke Tonjes "Hilda", Johann Karl, Johann Charles "John", Margaret Adelaida "Ada", Johann Heinrich, Leida Caroline, Henrietta Angeline "Etta", and Anna Ella.
He was admitted 31 Jul 1878 to the Illinois Central Hospital in Jacksonville, Illinois where he died at 5 am on 4 Apr 1881 from a stroke. Tonjes Dieken is buried in section D of Potter's Field (lots 380-407 contain 5 burials across each lot in chronological order, 1870-1882, lots 380 & 381 under south entrance road) in the Immanuel South section of the Diamond Grove Cemetery. Grave unmarked. (Many thanks to Linda Ryan for her efforts in locating this gravesite.)
