Milton served with the 77th Illinois infantry Company "A" in the War of the Rebellion (Civil War). He took part in the seige at Vicksburg, Mississippi, where he received a shot through his lungs just going over the breastworks. He received these wounds on May 22,1863. He enlisted in Knoxville, Knox County, Illinois, August 7, 1863 and discharged November 17, 1863 at Memphis, Tennessee. Milton married Nancy "Nannie" J. Greene on December 30, 1869 in Macon City, Macon County, Missouri. Milton and Nancy had two sons and a daughter, Milton, Jr.,George (George is buried in the same plot as Milton Sr.) and Lorena R (Rice). Milton Jr. is buried at Elmwood Cemetery, Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.
