OBITUARY (Traverse City Record-Eagle - Jun. 22, 2002)
SUTTONS BAY - Monica Mary Korson, 78, of Suttons Bay, our loving mother passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2002, and met our dad to spend eternity with him in heaven.

She was born May 4, 1924, in Foley, Minn. to the late Harry and Mary (Zylla) Gapinski. Monica lost her mother at a very young age. She pitched in working on the family farm and told us many stories of her childhood, the chores and the fun. Living through the Great Depression and a long Minnesota drought created an amazing strength and perseverance within our mother.

A Michigan man, introduced to her by a cousin, traveled over the Great Lakes to come courting. Six months later, Monica was wed to James Korson. They settled in Leelanau County and she spent a good part of her life raising their seven children and keeping house. In her later years, she spent her days gardening, reading, doing needlework, and most of all enjoyed the time spent with her grandchildren.

She taught her children the meaning of devotion, unconditional love, strength of body and soul, service to man and God and the power of prayer and love of God. We will miss her dearly for she has influenced our way of life immensely. We pray that we may be as strong, loving and devoted as she had been for us.

Monica is survived by her seven children, James Korson of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Gerard (Karen) Korson of South Boardman, Dennis (Sara Hysmith) Korson of Traverse City, Karen (Jeff) Schaub of Suttons Bay, Marian (James) Barbera of Traverse City, Robert (Lori) Korson of Traverse City, and Greg (Wendy) Korson of Sturgis; 13 grandchildren, Paul, Whitley, Christopher, Eric, Jared, James, Daniel, Jessica, Tia, Mary, Alex, Kristyn and Timothy; her brother, John (Ester) Gapinski of Foley, Minn.; her sisters, Sister Marl Gapinski, and Sister Eleta Gapinski; and many, many nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, Monica was preceded in death by her husband, James Joseph Korson on May 11, 1992; and two sisters, Bridget Czeck and Francis Prom.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today, and from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 23, at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. A rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Sunday.

A Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, June 24, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau, with the Rev. Edwin A. Thome as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mary's Catholic School in Lake Leelanau.
