Obituary of “Mollie” Mary Francis Langston Ross (1862-1941) – from the papers of Martha Alice Ross Greenwaldt.
Mrs. Mollie Ross Buried at Sidney by Mrs. F.L. Little
---- Mrs. Mollie Ross, wife of the late John C. Ross of Sidney, died at a Brownwood hospital June 2, 1941, following a heart attack that was caused by a fall when she broke her hip on May 28.
Mary Francis Langston, the only daughter of Thomas and Martha Ann Langston, was born in Lawrence County, Missouri, January 7, 1862. She moved to Texas with her parents in 1870, settled in East Waco and was educated there. In 1876, with the family consisting of her parents and four brothers, W.C., Jesse, Wilse and Tom, moved to Comanche County and lived the rest of her life never further away from Sidney than two miles. The Langston family had a large part in the development and growth of that community, in its civic, educational and religious life. A family that believed that a good name was to be chosen rather than great riches and, that honor and integrity were the main attributes of life.
She was married to John C. Ross on December 29, 1877 and ten children were born to them. Her husband and four children preceded her in death. Dewey and Hugh died at an early age; Harvey and White after maturity.
Mrs. Ross united with the Methodist Church at the age of twelve and has grown in grace with each passing year. The fabric of her life has been interwoven with the tenets of God and entwined with the weave and wool of faith and prayer. Mrs. Ross was a Christian in a deep, abiding sense; calm, sweet and unaffected. In the presence of trouble, adversity or death her faith was unwavering. After the death of her dearly beloved husband, she took up the broken threads of living and tied them together with unfaltering courage and made a happy home for her family. A home that welcomed both friend and stranger.
Mrs. Ross went about doing good cheerfully, sharing the blessings of life with others. Wise in council, charitable, loving and forgiving, her influence will linger long in the hearts of all who knew her.
Funeral services were held at the Sidneuy Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock with her pastor, Rev. Helm in charge. He was assisted by her nephew, Roy Langston, District Superintendent of the Cisco District, and Rev. E.R. Gordon of Comanche.
The body was laid to rest in Cox Cemetery.
She is survived by six children: Mrs. Belle Pendergrass of Corpus Christi, Frank Ross of Comanche, Mrs. Lola Boyd of Sidney, Ira Ross of Brownwood, Mrs. Iva Clayton of Comanche, and Claude B. Ross of Fort Worth; one brother, Wilse Langston of Loving; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. J.H. Ross of Texico, N.M.; 16 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends to mourn her loss.
Pall bearers were Clifton Lusk, Hillburn Arthur, Leslie Stewart, Charlie Livingston, Arthur Hilley, and Jack Clayton.
Among the out of town people attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Langston and family of Loving, Mr. and Mrs. Finley Staley of Abilene; Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Thamby of Anson, Mr. and Mrs. Joel Pendergrass and family of Corpus Christi, Mrs. Charlie Greenwaldt and family, Mrs. Charlie Carruth and family, Miss Bertha Ross, Mrs. Will Weaver, Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Ross, Mr. and Mrs. W.J.
