Stephen Aiken, of Co. I, enrolled [72nd IN] Feb. 26, 1864 in Indianapolis by Capt. Blake as a Corporal; mustered in Mar. 5, 1864 in Indianapolis by Lt. Melbourne at age 24. He was 5' 5" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. Born in Dec. 6, 1837 in Philadelphia, PA, employed as a farmer. Mustered out at the end of the war Sep. 14, 1865 in Chattanooga, TN. Notes: Corporal from 72nd IN Co. K before consolidating into 44th IN Jul. 1, 185. Retained 1 Enfield and accoutrements for $6. He filed Invalid Pension Application to receive Pension Certificate #234676 May 6, 1878; also listed Cos. C (served Apr.-Aug. 1861 as musician), E, and K (served Oct. 1861-Jan. 1863) in 10th IN Inf. Belonged to Lafayette, IN, G.A.R. Died Jul. 24, 1924 in West Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co., IN; buried there in Spring Vale Cemetery, Sec. 19, Lot 61."
