James F. Advey

Mass of Christian burial for James F. Advey, 83, of Madison, will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 16, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2846 Hubbard Road, Madison.

Mr. Advey died March 13, 2001, at home after a long and vvaliant battle against lung cancer and is now with his Lord.

He was born Aug. 19, 1917, in Painesville.

He was a long time member of Madison Country Club where he loved to play golf with his wife. He won many awards and trophies and was the Class A Champion at the club twice. More recently, he was active in the Senior Golf League at Erie Shores Golf Club in Madison. Mr. Advey was also a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, American Society of Safety Engineers, Society of Ohio Safety Engineers, American Legion Post 336 and Elks Lodge 545. Prior to the US entrance to World War II, he enlisted in the Canadian Royal Air Force and took his flight training in Ontario, Canada. Then, he enlisted as a fighter pilot in the US Army Air Corps in May 1942 and attained rank of Captain, flying P-38's in the European, African, and Middle East Theaters where he flew 54 missions. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with eight oak leaf clusters, Purple Heart, British General Service Medal, American Defense Medal, and African-Middle Eastern Medal. Jim had a great love for his country and was very disappointed and down-hearted in the way the country was going in the last eight years and was greatly encouraged with the election of President Bush. Jim loved the Lord, his country, his family, and his in-laws. He was a true animal lover and leaves behind his faithful companion "Smokie the Cat."

Mr. Advey was employed by Diamond Shamrock as a safety director for 39 years, retiring in 1977.

Survivors are his wife, Nancy (Burnett) Advey; sisters, Joanne Feld and Rosemary (Andy) Rigo; and brother, Robert (Ruth Alden) Advey.

His parents, Joseph and Elizabeth (Lefelhoc) Advey, are deceased.

Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Behm Family Funeral Home, 26 River Street, (corner Rts. 84 and 528), Madison. The Rev. Luigi Miola of Immaculate Conception Church and Rev. Robert Ladygo of the Bible Baptist Church will officiate at services. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Painesville.
